The Archbishop is the main antagonist of the Maoyu series, driving most of the conflict throughout the first part of the series before taking center stage in its final arc by initiating the Third Holy Key Expedition.
He rises to power in the Central Church sometime during the early events of the series. The Young Merchant describes him as a "true fideist" after he declares the Crimson Scholar a heretic, and as the series progresses, it becomes clear that he is extremely power-hungry.

The reason for the Archbishop's desire for power is never really explained, though it may have to do with being a distant descendant of the Library Clan members who traveled to the Human world.
